Now that I think about it, my problems usually only present themselves AFTER I have used Xine to playback a video (either DD or PCM soundtrack). I wonder if Xine is doing something to cause the problems?

I can use either xine or mplayer for movies. I don't have any problems at all. My asound file is the same as the one posted in this thread by Neil Milne.
