Yes, it is the preferred networking method between multiple linux boxes. Samba will work, but has some overhead that you may see a difference with if you were to give NFS a run. NFS has other benefits as well, but my guess is you really only care about the speed and efficiency of getting your data to your front end, and I do think NFS would help there.
