After upgrading to 0.18 from atrpms I had to make sure that I had:
Option "RenderAccel" "false"
in the devices section of xorg.conf, or else mythfrontend would cause X to
spin wildly, requiring a kill -9 to stop it. I have no idea if this could
be related to your problem but the symptoms sound similar.
