You can verify this by specify "-vo x11" to mplayer and the problem will disappear, though the image quality may not be as good or your machine may not be able to keep up.
You are indeed correct. Guess I need to get myself a new video card. That explains why my mythbox is fine, too -- it's a pundit with the winischofer sis driver.
What video card driver you are using? I've filed a bug report with X.org radeon driver. Make a noise there if you'd like. The more people complain, the earlier the problem will be solved. (I've found people have been complaining for 2 years.)
