Anybody have any input?

Specify the "DisplaySize" of your monitor in XF86Config/xorg.conf such
that X runs at 100dpi *or* use

startx -- -dpi 100

(yes, that's "startx, space, dash, dash, space, dash, space, 100").

I also don't know the original question, but using the blanket -dpi line means you need to be running a "square-pixel" format. For example, DVD resolution of 720x480 isn't square in either 4:3 or 16:9. The DisplaySize lets you have different X and Y resolutions for non-square formats.
