There are people that have the backend running on FreeBSD - see http://mythtv.son.org/tiki-index.php for details. Basically they have recording and playback working as well as livetv but, as they say, it 'needs more testing'. It also only seems to work with a PVR250 (only card with semi-stable drivers) at the moment. I wouldn't mind switching back to BSD and this certainly looks promising...
