The mythtv-setup program exposes a few settings that are helpful here.
One is the number of seconds to wait before declaring the server idle
and some others that allow you to have scripts called at various
points. It should be obvious where everything fits but in case it isn't
post here again. The official docs might also have something on this
topic.
