Yeah, instead, you can worry about remapping the keys for MPlayer, xine, zsnes, MythTV, and ... (Just the reason why I use LIRC with my ATI Remote Wonder--for which there is also a kernel keyboard driver.)

I've just not had very good luck with lirc, most of the problems stem from focus issues, who gets the key press.
