Two questions:
1. Are you using a window manager?
2. Are you using irxevent?
Not using a window manager would cause a focus
problem, which combined with using irxevent would
cause the keystroke to go to the wrong window.
I haven't had any problems at all using lirc-compliant
applications (mythfrontend, xmame and xine are the
ones I use).

It all but eliminates the need for lirc, which in
my opinion is a
good thing. No worrying about having lirc
support compiled into
other packages. e.g; Mplayer, xine, zsnes, and
what ever other
add-ons you might use.
Yeah, instead, you can worry about remapping the
keys for MPlayer,
xine, zsnes, MythTV, and ... (Just the reason why
I use LIRC with my
ATI Remote Wonder--for which there is also a
kernel keyboard driver.)

I've just not had very good luck with lirc, most of
the problems stem
from focus issues, who gets the key press.

I was using twm and irxevent. This point is moot now though. I've been
using a learning remote and a wireless keyboard. That has worked well
for me, only problem was the few number of keys that I was able to
program into the remote. Using the ir-kbd-i2c drive I can have as many
buttons that my remote can muster and have them appear as the keypresses
I want in the input stream. Thanks for the info though.
