Your first point was probably more on-target. If the installation kernel can't probe the hardware then that's a really good indication that the modules don't exist. I have an Asus P4P800SE with an on-board gigabit Marvell ethernet. It would boot knoppix and find the ethernet no problem, but whenever I tried to install Debian it didn't find the network card. The reason was quite simple: the Debian kernel didn't have a Marvell module. The solution was easy: I installed from the netinst CD but stopped the install at the point where it was about to go to the network to apt-get the rest of the distro. I then booted Knoppix and copied the kernel and modules onto the hard drive. After a reboot I added the new kernel to the lilo configuration, restarted using the new kernel and continued the installation. -- Joke template: Three guys walk into a bar. One of them is a wee bit stupid, and the whole scene unfolds with a tedious inevitability.
