I can't speak to your ATI issues but I can confirm that it is possible
to get this setup working in Gentoo as I'm watching CSI on my Gentoo
bases MythTV box now :) My setup has an Nvidia based video card which
does not allow me to use the kernel frame buffer device along with the
nvidia.ko kernel module this may be your problem too looking at the
last line of dmesg. I suspect your issue is not "Gentoo w/TV-Out" but
ATI tv-out that would be my first step, once you have X working move
onto the IVTV part.
I just upgraded from a bt878 to a PVR-500 and have to say it went very
well, though you have to make sure your myth user is in the video group
otherwise you'll get permissions errors accessing the tuner on
/dev/v4l/video0. To verify that you can use the tuner at all use
something like TVTime which doesn't do all the extra stuff Myth does.
Now that you can watch TV this is when you should try to make it all
play nice with Myth. Since you should now have Myth working correctly
this is when you should work on LIRC as it is the last and in terms of
a working system least important. I realize that for usability it is
the most important but a working remote and no recordings doesn't do
you much good either.

I cut this down to make it to the list. Thanks

I
am having very little success setting up myth on multiple levels. Any
help is greatly appreciated. I am pulling my hair outand there was not
much to start with!
At this point, after following more than a few howto's and guides, I am
ready to start over if that is the best course of action. Is there a
clean howto for gentoo with TV-out working?
Thanks!

I could not get TV-out to work with the radeon driver but it is working
with vesa
Is this a possible problem?
It was in color, now it is B&W only, ugghhh
I cannot get the video input to show anything but black static. The
cable (RG-6) is attached to the coax connector and I have checked that
there is signal.
Which device is the right one? I get
output from /dev/v4l/video0, video24 and video32 but it is black static.
I have followed the ivtv guidance to get
the firmware into /lib/modules... but no change even after a reboot.
The mce remote does not work. (it is the one with gray on top) I tried
jarod's file and the one that gets created by manually when I compiled
lirc from source.
The lircd log below shows it as ok after the
last reboot and it loads the firmware accorging to dmesg below.
irw show nothing.
Now I have lots of this in /var/log/messages and dmesg
