If your Nvidia had Nvidia's drivers it would have had hard-decode support, if
your ATI card uses the xorg drivers it doesn't have that. I can run 800x600
on a 300MHz machine with the right Nvidia drivers, it fails to play 480x480
with the xorg drivers.
