Thank you to Meatwad and others for the directional guidance.  I looked at the Sonance Quintette 522QR (45 Watt, 5-1/4 PolyP perpendicular woofer, 3/4" Cloth pivoting tweeter).  After further consideration we decided to step it up a notch and go with 4 of the Sonance Symphony S622TR (125 watt, 6-1/2" PolyP pivoting woofer, 1" Silk pivoting tweeter) with the in-ceiling enclosures and 1 Boston Acoustics DSi495 (100 Watt 3 way 8", 3-1/2", 1") for the center channel.  I didn't like the idea of perpendicular speakers in the ceiling.  I've read that angling the tweeters is most important for perception, but I figured if I can do better within budget...

(BTW: I'm getting a Yamaha receiver and sub on hand-me-down from my brother-in-law.)

I got what I believe to be really great prices from http://audiophileliquidator.com ($199 & $40 /pair on the Sonance, $299 for the Boston Acoustics)  I completed the wire fishing and crown molding install this weekend, and am completely stoked.  Photos here.  Now if I can just get sound out of my MythTV box,  I'd be doing good.

Thanks again to all who gave me advise, and my wife for saying "If that's what you want, quit researching and order the better set."

So, with that said, I'm shooting for the $1000 for all 5 and a sub
range. The greatest challenge is that there is no back wall or right
wall to this viewing space. You can see what I'm talking about on my
flickr page. The TV is going above the fireplace.

Pictures! I see your predicament with the walls now. With that color, I
see why the wife doesn't care for traditional in-walls. I'd hate to
break up the space any further as well. I'm voting for in-ceiling fronts
and surround. Besides, you'll have no room for the center channel once
you squeeze the TV in above the mantle.

If you were my customer with that budget I'd steer you to the Sonance
Quintette 522QR (not the 521's) in-ceilings. Just a hair larger than
your standard light cans with adjustable soft dome tweeters. Poly's,
mylars or metals will be *harsh* in that room. Retro in some backboxes
if you can, stuff the snot outta the joist cavities if you can't.

Realisticly, you'll be around 1500 after you mix in a decent sub. Don't
worry about low-freq extension, you'll want a smaller driver (8-10 inch)
to reach higher up, say around 135Hz. the 105-120Hz range is a no-man's
land for crossovers. Energy or JBL would be good choices for a budget
sub in that area.

How good are you at fishing wires?
