I am new to cpmtools and follow exactly what you are doing, but
unfortunately I have a problem.
I created the dummy file with all E5, but when i execute the command line:
*mkfs -f s100ide -b dummy.file -b CPMLDR.COM <http://CPMLDR.COM>
s100ide.dsk*
it always tells me 'unknown format s100ide'. Yes, I created and entered it
in diskdefs which resides in the same folder as all the other files. If I
move the file away then it tells me it cannot find the file - so, what
about my 'def' is a problem?
I am using the command prompt in windows 7...

probably something basic, but what am i missing?
