I had the exact same experience with the MAX 232 chips, bought 10, and put them 
all in the garbage.
They would work for 1 minute, then get really hot and stop working.

I bought them from  gc_supermarket, they are still around, 64,000+ feedback, 
99%, but then again, how many like me left positive feedback before discovering 
bad parts?

Lesson learned, don't buy large quantities until you are certain.

Watch out for bogus or dead 232 chips too.  A friend tells me that chips from 
China, with a MAX232 label, were DOA or got really, really hot in operation.  
He says that when he looked at the chip markings with a magnifying glass, they 
looked fuzzy and poorly done.  Wonder if these were real MAXIM production, 
moved offshore, or counterfeits???
