Roger, I had the exact same experience with the MAX 232 chips, bought 10, and put them all in the garbage. They would work for 1 minute, then get really hot and stop working.
I bought them from gc_supermarket, they are still around, 64,000+ feedback, 99%, but then again, how many like me left positive feedback before discovering bad parts? Lesson learned, don't buy large quantities until you are certain. A friend tells me that chips from China, with a MAX232 label, were DOA or got really, really hot in operation. He says that when he looked at the chip markings with a magnifying glass, they looked fuzzy and poorly done. Wonder if these were real MAXIM production, moved offshore, or counterfeits???
