YES, it is not uncommon for new production (2014-2015) electrolytic capacitors 
to be
smaller (diameter or height) than original 1970s production units.
This is largely due to advances in material sciences over the past 40 years.

SNAP-IN models, designed for printed circuit board (PCB) mounting, have 
replaced the
earlier "FP" twist-lock (Mallory, others) models and replaced the Screw 
terminal models in some applications.
