My consideration was that then I'd only be able to check one database, the one that password fits. I am not going to ask why $USER4$ works in checkcommands.cfg but not in services.cfg. :) Looking at http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/1_0/macros.html it seems like the $USERn$ macros should work across the board, but I guess it refers to Nagios internal processes rather than configuration files.
