Karen, Fortunately, it had as good an outcome as possible!  However, I must
wonder, WHAT were they hoping to steal from your salon?  Will they be back?  Is
it a neighborhood in decline problem?  What can you do to avoid the situation
in the future? (alarm system? bars on windows? decals that SAY you have an
alarm system?)  Will they be bold enough to come back during business hours
when they won't HAVE to break in?????   I think you need to think
about developing a personal security plan for yourself and your business!
We had some crack heads thar broke into our day spa, and a few other
businesses in our complex, and stole the owners petty cash money.  They DID
catch them, and I called to see how we could get the owners $100.00 back.  I
was informed by the police that there was no money to get back, they had
already spent it all on drugs!  Mr. Policeman had no humor at my suggestion
that he could go to where they had bought the drugs, and tell the folks there
that the drugs had been bought with stolen money and get the money back!  What
is it with these guys anyway!?  I thought it was a perfectly plausible solution
to the problem!  Oh well!  We added an alarm system and better door locks!
Please consider adding some sort of additional security measures to your salon
though, the economy and drugs are driving people to take chances!

Was awakened early Jan 2 by a phone call from Key West Police telling me that
my salon had been broken into and they needed me to come there ASAP so they
could clear the premises and assess the damages.

Thirteen minutes later (it’s an 11 minute drive) I rolled in to find that
someone had tried to get in through a window in my front room, and fortunately,
the product/retail shelving sitting in front of the window probably thwarted
them. There was product and broken glass all over the front room, but the only
thing broken was a glass Christmas tree ornament. All the product was in
plastic bottles/pumps, so other than the tremendous noise they must have made
as the shelves tippled about, nothing happened. The person didn’t make it
in…there were too many very long, sharp shards left in the window frame for
them to have crawled in.  So nothing was taken.

Two hours of clean up, and I was back in business. Very thankful!!!  My
landlord will be replacing the windows…this next week hopefully. Meanwhile, we
simply placed a piece of wood in the frame and locked the hurricane shutter
over the whole window.

OK…now that I have that out of the way, I am looking forward to a nice boring
UNEVENTFUL 2009!
