The number one reason this happened is that the nails lifted and bacteria got in between the nail and the product. The bacteria then had a party feeding off of the dead cells of the nails and the nails natural oils. The stain is it's byproduct AKA bacteria poo. The question to ask is why did she lift. If she washes her hands a lot, she needs to use oil to prevent the product from drying out and lifting. Oil or lotions don't cause lifting, however, if there is lifting present, it will accelerate it.
Water alone doesn't cause a greenie, Doug Scoon explains that it's like saying if you water the ground a flower will grow. It won't unless you have a seed. Just like this, if you get a lifted nail, water will not cause a greenie, but bacteria (the seed) will. Also, a greenie isn't mold. Mold isn't a human pathogen, a greenie is pseudomonas bacteria. Remove the nail, lightly buff the green area, it will not come off, it has to grow out. You can then safely prep and reapply the nail if your state board allows. Throw away any files and buffers that you used on top of the bacteria. Hope that helps!
