GREAT suggestions!!  I think I will utilize them with my next donation!  I have 
talked to many small business owners and one of them suggested what I said I am 
now doing-- give them out ONLY to those who patronize our businesses. 

My feelings on getting your name out there-- I have been to MANY fundraiser 
sent auctions and those with door prizes. At the silent auction-- I could never 
tell you those businesses that donated unless I was interested in the "prize". 
Honestly, the only people that MAY remember are the fundraising committee. 

At the most recent one I attended, I cannot even remember biz name of two of my 
wins. 

In this time of economic hardships, I have to pull back like everyone else. 
Also, there are VERY large nail companies that will not donate to events. There 
was one company from SYS that never followed through with their prize. They got 
their name out there but never sent the prize. BAD PR!!

Again, we each have to do what we feel is right for us. Giving to all charities 
and organizations just is not going to happen with me. And believe me, I get 
hit at least twice a week. One week I had about 7 come in!!! We have to put a 
stop somewhere!!

 well....I have had some experiences similar to lynnette's but...I always gave 
a GC for a full set...hoping to get new fill clients. I have my GCs in a gold 
pillow box with a gold and silver spiral ribbon ...everyone came to know that 
THOSE were my GCs....my name was out there...so even if i did not get a client 
I DID get free publicity!? Yes I had the lady call and want to use her full set 
GC for a mani on her young daughter...I ended up doing that because I had some 
time anyway....didn't get a new client there...BUT those that insisted on a 
certain time...WE are in control of that...if it is not possible then no 
way....can't change a standing client. In the end I agree with Diana...it gets 
your name on there FREE!? Oh and ALWAYS remember to put expiration dates on 
donations...i have even put "not redeemable during holiday season or something 
like not redeemable 12/12- 1/3 something like that whatever the dates would 
be.? You can also make them redeemable on one or two of your slow days...good 
for wed and thursday only...something like that..It's YOUR choice!

  I am with Sue on this one. For years I have give out gift certificates to 
drum up business. I made many mistakes and learned in the process. I no longer 
will give out a GC to anyone. 
 * one woman called and said she does not do manicures, but could I do her 9 
year old? Sure I say. Then she arrives with her 9 year old and a younger 
sibling. Now how could I do one and not the other? This woman KNEW this and 
took advantage of it. 
 * Another one called long after the expiration date. YES, if you give them 
away, put an expiration date on them. It forces them to TRY to use it. 
 * I gave a nice gift package along with a GC for our library who was running a 
contest for couples and reading books. The "winner" called and insisted that I 
take her at 2:30 and she had to be out by 3:15. I had NO times available as 
they were all standing appointments. She said, "but I have a gift certificate." 
And this makes you special? Sure, I will tell my standing clients that YOU want 
their time. OKAY!!!
 * When I first started out I gave all the school secretaries in my district a 
GC for a free manicure--along with selected teachers. I did not put an expire 
date. What they did was wait until they had a function to attend. One of the 
teachers still tells me she has her card in her wallet. This was 8 years ago!!! 
OMG...
 * had one person ask for a GC donation. I told him I would give him a gift 
bag. He said no, they only want certificates. Sheesh!!! Guess what he got? 
NADA...
 * I also get the school activities, churches, organizations that contact me 
constantly for something. I see these people patronizing the chop shops. I have 
decided I will NO longer donate to anyone unless they patronize my salon. I am 
quite generous to them, too. If you come to me, sure I will donate to your 
church, your grand/kids clubs, sports, etc... But if you do not come to me for 
your services, then you will not get something from me. Product costs ME money. 
GC cost my time. I want to give it to someone who keeps me able to pay my 
mortgage!!!!
 Bottom line from ALL of these-- NOT ONE PERSON HAS COME BACK. I have not even 
got clients from any of them. Who needs that? I take MY time, which is worth a 
lot to me if I have to lose time/$$ to do these people? NO THANK YOU.

 I'm one of those people who chose not to donate to these things.? I chose not
 to do it for the reasons you mentioned...because I have found the 'type' of 
people 
 that have ended up in my chair because of the donations seem to be more trouble
 than they are worth.? It's also the same reason I chose not to take the high 
school
 kids at prom/graduation time.? Inevitably I turn away my faithful paying 
clients and 
 somehow always find that it would have been better for my business if I had

 the other appointment to begin with.? 

 I would say let go of caring what the other people are doing.? They are doing 
what
 they feel is best for them.? For whatever their reasons may be.? That's what I
