Cira,
It just means indigenous to an area.
When I got Lyme Disease back in 1991, my research showed that the tick that
carried Lyme was endemic to Montgomery County. (Where I live)
Out of all the counties in PA, Montgomery County was the highest endemic area
in the state.

So a Pandemic is "worldwide" and an Epidemic is only in a region of the world.
for example AIDS.  It sould be the AIDS pandemic not the AIDS epidemic.  All
this terminology is so confusing.

epidemic:
The occurrence of cases of an illness in a community or region which
is in excess of the number of cases normally expected for that
disease in that area at that time.
