As a salon owner myself, I think the owner is looking out for herself!
An IC per laws in Ohio, the owner cannot dictate: hours, products, prices,&
manner od dress, so on. IC HAS to go & buy a salon license saying she is
"renting" a space in a particular salon under that salons name. Oh sure, you
can have an IC sign a contract that if she wants to work in this salon as an IC
she HAS to abide by these rules, but that truely is not an IC.
As a NEW manicurist I would NEVER do this, NEVER!
When I hire a manicurist I give her an hourly base rate PLUS a commision, as an
incentive to do more! I do this for a period of approx. 3 months this way she
has time, if she's good to start & build a cliental. After the 3 months are up
I jack the commission rate up & drop the hourly rate.
I will tell you I sometimes take a beating, and other times it pans out for us
both! But it does weed out the good ones from the not so good ones. I also have
her answer the phone as she normally comes to the salon with little or no
cliental, as our receptionist is part-time. She helps clean & do towels & odds
& ends od the salon.
This is just my 2 cents worth or more! LOL
I have always said to the staff and students: 1. Like what you are doing. 2.
Like who you are working for & the others that you are working with, & in time
the money will come. 3. Don't think of this as a job..... Think of this as a
Career, that by the way YOU chose!
A little windy @ times! I know!

The same old story. The owner wants the best of both worlds.
I hope someone will correct me if I am wrong and I am sure if it-lol- if she is
an independent contractor, shouldn't SHE be giving THEM the 35%???
So it seems they want to take payment from the client and pay her?
IF she is truly an IC, she should have the choice of whether or not to accept
credit cards.
It is my personal feeling that the receptionist's fee should be included in
that 35%.
What REALLY scares me are these UNKNOWN fees that will crop up. What other fees
are they talking about? They are waiving them because she is new?
I would not take on an "IC" with all the mystery shrouded in it. It sounds like
the owners do not really know what they are doing.
I think she would be better off as an employee for the time being.
It would not surprise me to learn that these owners will then dictate what
products they want her to use: that she will not be able to retail and hours
she will be given. I am just getting a bad feeling with this.
Buenos dias,

Subject: NailTech:: independent contractor

Hey everyone. Question for those that have been in the industry. I was talking
to a new nail tech fresh from school. She was telling me she got a job as an
independent contractor for a brand new salon. She can use their tables, towels,
etc... but has to use her own lotion, cuticle oils, implements,etc.. They are
giving her 65% and they are taking 35% BUT then they are charging her $100.00 a
month for a receptionist fee AND charging her to use their credit card machine
AND said that in a few months they are reinstating other fees they are waiving
because she is new. I told her that was a rip off. What are everyone's thoughts
on this? I just want her to be treated fair since she is new and does not know
any different.
