I personally tend to agree more with Patti on this one....and then take in a few different factors. For example...is the appointment on my busiest day of the week? Is the appointment "costing" me my lunch time? Was I able to fit a fix in without affecting other clients? Etc. I will fix broken nails for free sometimes, and I always tell them something to the effect of "no charge today, I had an extra few minutes, so don't worry about it this time". That way they know that usually it's not easy to give the service away. Also, I consider if they're pickers, and create more work for me, or are they a client that never breaks a nail? Are they respectful of my time, and the client after them? And the biggie, do I think of them as friends, or are they truly just a client? And many times I will tell them that I wish I was independently wealthy cuz I wish I didn't have to make a living, that way I could do their nails for free, but I have to charge...lol.
I also think of it this way...have you ever had a friend, neighbor, or family member that had a skill or profession and they helped you with something? They usually do it for free, or give you a discount, don't they? I've had lots of help from people...electrical, plumbing, gutter cleaning, babysitting, etc. I usually offer to feed them, or pay them something, but I am aware that if I can hired someone, it would have cost a lot more. For one of my cousins, I will pack up everything I need, and go to their house and give pedicures for the evening...would never "charge" them money for it. They feed me and my son while I'm there, and we have a blast! Do I feel taken advantage of? Absolutely not...they'd help me out in the drop of a hat, and it's an easy way for me to "repay" them. Not that I even look at it like repayment, it feels more like just hanging out with them but it's an excuse to "schedule" time with them. I think the bottom line on it is this...I don't think anybody is right or wrong with how they handle it, as long as you feel comfortable with what you are doing. If you aren't charging and you feel as if you're being taken advantage of, then I'd say you should be charging that person and should address that. For me...this is my "thing" ...people love a"deal" and what I do is a great deal! it is worth a rhinestone or two to retain a client so be it. You should of course be charging good prices while doing this. I think it was Karen once that told me to write a ticket up with all the real prices on it...then mark complimentary on the bottom and add that up...and subtract the comps from the real price and circle the new total....This way the client knows just exactly how much you are giving them!!
