That's why if you have ever been in a critical care nicu they watch you wash
your hands. We had gowns too. They teach the parents and visitors how to wash
and how far to wash. And watch them. At least at the ones JJ was in. Other ones
I don't know about. That's on them. But they instruct the parents and watch
them and make sure they are washing properly so the babies don't get sick. I
have been there
For 9 months with JJ in 4 different NICU's and all of them watched instructed
gowned and made sure we washed our hands properly and if we sneezed coughed we
washed all over again.

Even with short nails, whether you have product on your nails or not, it all
comes down to hand washing. Having something on top of your nails doesn't make
MORE crud under your nails. The crud is there, so it still comes down to
proper hand washing.

If you have long enhancements it's very hard to get in there and maje sure that
everything is cleaned out from under nails unless you use a nail brush or a
surgical brush.
And in the isolation area wr had to use surgical brushes and the lovely soap
that cracks your skin open.
You learn to keep your nails short. No mattter what when you work in the nicu.

Wearing enhancements of any type will not increase the germs or bacteria under
your nails. It all comes down to basic hand washing, which most do not do and
scarily, most don't know how to do properly. I am sure as nail techs, we have
all seen people with natural nails with disgusting crud under them. Natural
nails do not make a difference. Proper handwashing does.

Diana,

I think the nurses at all of the hospitals are not allowed to wear acrylics.
My niece had her baby in the nic u and she was told not wear anything on her
hands.

This is a first!!!A client of mine just adopted a baby, so excited!!!
The baby was born March 31st and she wasn't due until late June. The
little thing comes home from the hospital on Monday, her muscles are
now working so she can suck and swallow and digest.

Anyway the nic unit told mom to remove acrylics, she cannot have
polish, zero zilch for awhile. Why? Because the baby has not grown
enough skin to prevent contact dermatitis, and other skin diseases
and the advice is to take all precautions. I have never heard of
this, have any of you? diana from indiana
