I agree Jill..but.. wouldn't it be a novel idea to actually HAVE accredited CEU
classes for nails (or hair or whatever) available?? I would've been there in a
heart beat! I've taken many classes...and they were NOT cheap and
unfortunately they WERE not accredited CEU classes. What a waste! (not my
classes...the CEU's)
I would think that that would be a major money maker for some distributors.
Crap...in Florida...in the Tampa Bay area there has to be a gadzillion nail
salons...and they all need to get their CEU's somewhere. OK I know it's once
every 2 years but... it would be extra money..oh well...I am in NY now...no
need to worry about it!

KY requires 6 hours of CEU's (I have a cosmetology license but it's
the same for a nail tech license). Let me think of how to put
this.................... the techs that want to learn will seek info
out on their own. The techs that don't want to learn will be in the
CEU class in body only (not in spirit). So it's 6 of 1, half a dozen
of another. Or another saying would be "you can lead a horse to water,
but you can't make it drink".

When the KY state board implemented a $300 fee, plus copious amounts
of paperwork, which one had to submit in order to be approved to teach
CEU's, essentially most all of the nail classes evaporated. At least
in our area they did.

That might have been around the same time KY started allowing online
courses, too, which would explain why all the nail classes dried up
here. About 95% of the people in these nail classes were Vietnamese,
and the other 5 people (myself included) were non-Vietnamese.

The Vietnamese techs would sit in the back of the class talking to
each other in their language and the instructor was constantly having
to stop class and ask them to be quiet. Then they'd be quiet for
awhile, texting other people on their cell phones, but soon the
chatter would start up again. It was very distracting. 6 hours seemed
like 6 days!

Now I've driven as far as 3 hours away to take CEU classes, and with
the exception of the "funeral hairstyling" class (complete with a
"behind the scenes" field trip to a funeral home....unfortunately, no
dead bodies were on display), all have left me feeling less than
inspired. At one class I taught the "teacher" how to do a sculptured
nail (hey, she asked). But after that last experience, I figured I'd
just stick around our town and take hair classes instead. At least
then I had the hopes of learning something I didn't already know. Plus
it's not as costly as traveling out of town.

So in order to get my CEU's, I've been present in body only for many
boring hair classes. Mostly I sat in the back and quietly worked on
filling in my standing appts. in my appt. book, filing my nails,
reading Nails mag and Nailpro, fantasizing on other places I could be
that would be more fun, such as at home cleaning my toilets.

Now the online companies that host nail classes are extremely
affordable (most in the $15 range). Last year I took my first online
course, at home in my PJ's, with my cup of coffee, and it was the best
CEU experience I've had thus far. You read a short article, maybe a
few pages long, then take a test at the end of each chapter; hit
"submit" and you're done!

No more getting up at the crack of dawn, wasting gas driving to a
boring class. No more wasting my entire day sitting on hard chairs
that hurt my back. No more dreading the CEU experience. The only thing
I miss is visiting with other professionals in the classes. Other than
that, I'm all about the online CEU tests!!!

4 years ago. We were required 16 hours every 4 years half of which were OSHA,
Sanitation, State rules and half technical ( manicuring, hair styling, skin
care
etc.) As with anything else, theory is boring but, alot of points are
necessary. Some people will absorb the info and use it and others will only
put
in their time and complain that they have to be at the class at all.

mandatory classes for a state is a good thing. Seems that some of the techs
found most CEU classes were not worth it. Not to mention time, travel and
expenses.

later... LOL....
