April, Shellac is polish. It's not gel, it's a hybrid - it goes on the same way polish does. No prep, just polish it on with the brush in the bottle. Just. Like. Nail. Polish. Cure between each layer, period. Super easy.
I'm not sure who "manicures that last" is but CND has been working on this for 5 years so I don't believe the technology could have been copied this soon or is as good.
