Shellac is polish. It's not gel, it's a hybrid - it goes on the same
way polish does. No prep, just polish it on with the brush in the
bottle. Just. Like. Nail. Polish. Cure between each layer, period.

I'm not sure who "manicures that last" is but CND has been working on
this for 5 years so I don't believe the technology could have been
copied this soon or is as good.

Off. It is in pots, not polish bottles like Gelish or Shellac. The
application is the same as both of them and I can personally say it
holds up wonderful. I did my own nails on April 3rd, gardened, heavy
cleaning, typing, dishes. It has been 11 days now and there is no
wearing on the tips. I did not have any shrinkage when I applied it
as some have said. As a test I did not use any top coat at all and
they still have a decent amount of shine, I even got a compliment on
Monday about how nice they looked.
Nothing in this industry is secret for very long :) Just because CND
was working on this for 5 years does not mean others were not at the same time!
I know this service will be great for the industry, get those
part-time and occasional manicure clients in your books full time!!
