Hello Diana !
I am NOT scrubbing it in to the nail but I am applying it very very
thin.
I just watched the video and it *looks like* Danny does 1 SUPER thin
coat and then makes sure there is no overflow and then applies another
thin coat.
here is the video link:
http://www.nailharmony.com/Video/VideoLibraryGelish.aspx
however I plan to contact them tomorrow and ask about that. I will
report back to what I find out.

I have not had any issues with Gelish whatsoever.
I don't find the basecoat to be thick though ??? Are you floating it
instead of pressing it ? hmmm, not sure... I'd call them if you feel
it is thick, because mine is not.

I'm sure that protein bond ( NuBond, other non-acid primer etc...)
would probably help Shellac to last longer but I'm wondering if the
soak off would be effected because of it and that is really the only
reason at this point that I personally am using Shellac
in some cases over Gelish. That is a good question. I'm sure someone
on this list has added a non-acid primer to try it out and they could
probably chime in.
I do like that it is not needed with the Gelish though. He shows a
dehydrator on the video but I have been using my scrubfresh ( like I
do with everything) and it works like a dream :)
