Ladies - What is the difference between an SOG and a gel polish?
SOG (soak off gel) is a gel that will soak off in acetone or a soak off solution made by the manufacturer to remove their product. Some manufactures offer SOG in clear only. Some offer SOG in clear and colors. You can use color SOG on acrylic, clear SOG, hard gel (gel that does not soak off) or natural nails. Gel polish can be a little more confusing. Some people call any color gel, "gel polish". Some people are referring to soak off colored gel that comes in a bottle that looks like a polish bottle and some are referring to CNDs Shellac which is a gel/lacquer hybrid and is soaked off with acetone. Either type can be used over acrylic, clear SOG and hard gel. Shellac is designed to be used on natural nails. Does the polish on come in colors, ie could you do a french with it on a natural nail? Yes. Most gels that come in a polish bottle are soak off and have a French manicure color selection. Do you need to soak off the gel polish and re-apply? OR is the gel polish something you use as a gel overlay? I soak off completely, then reapply when doing natural nails. I file off the color if the client is waring gel overlays, hard gel or SOG. If the client is not changing color, I do not necessarily remove all the color. SOG can be worn as an enhancement and does not need to be soaked off at every appointment, but, clear SOG is the enhancement, not the color gel. I have found the color alone not to be strong enough and to lift if a clear SOG is not also used an a base or foundation.
