The way I have done this is...I don't buff, apply protein bond or something wonderful, then two coats color and gel top. Your way might work as well. I have not tried Shellac over an ac nail, just Eco and Gelish and it worked. And like you it was just on one nail that had ac on it.
I don't think you have to use clear tips but some say you do. I use natural or white tips with traditional gel and I have used them with Light Elegance soak-off and it stayed for several weeks until the nail grew out. I built the nail up a little so I could just file the color off each time.
