I've always kept my brushes laying flat in a closed drawer & like you I 
only clean them with monomer. My brushes last a year or more, so like Holly 
said, don't hang them or leave them out in the open to collect dust & 
debris. For acrylics I use red sable brushes with a wooden handle & I write 
the date on the handle when I first start using them. Then as time gets 
closer to a year from that date, I order another brush. Works for me!
