Actually, I was planning on using the vb6 task to do the actual compile for
me. From the docs I believe it verifies references exist but doesn't
actually compute a dependency tree.

I'm not building anything in that is specific to my project, so I hope it
will be a standalone wrapper task for the vb6 task just as the solution task
wraps the individual .NET tasks. 

I've only put a few hours of work into it yet, so it is nowhere near ready.
On the other hand, we have a real need for this task :) 

The product I am trying to build turns out to have 187 vb projects, about 40
missing references and 1 circular reference (argh).

Have you looked at the vb6 task in nant-contrib ? It does some 
dependency scanning but maybe not quite to the level you are describing. 
Would the task you are looking at building be suitable for general use 
or is it specific to your project ?
