Watch Your Language!
by Susan Shown Harjo
An "Indian" lexicon lies within the English language, coloring attitudes and
actions toward Native Peoples. Most English-speakers do not even notice it
exists, let alone that it degrades the Native subjects and the spoken and
written word.

No Reservations
by Pauline Arrillaga
Many Indians believed the Indian Adoption Program of more than 30 years ago
was just another attempt by the U.S. government to 'kill the Indian, save the
man,' but one, Andrew Hodges, has a much different view.

Indian Gaming - Part 2
by Vicki Lockard with help from NIGA
In this series, I am going to explore Indian Gaming. Part 1 will provide some
background and basic facts. Part 2 will focus on some specific tribes and the
impact that gaming has had on them.Gaming has been a part of the United
States from the colonial era up through today. Lotteries were critical to
funding the Revolutionary War, and the colonization of America. All 13
original colonies established lotteries, usually more than one, to raise
revenue. Playing the lottery became a civic responsibility. Proceeds helped
establish some of the nation's earliest and most prestigious universities --
Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Dartmouth, Princeton, and William and Mary. Lottery
funds were also used to build churches and libraries. Ben Franklin, John
Hancock, and George Washington were all prominent sponsors of specific
lotteries for public works projects.

The Confederate Indians
by Raven Weaver
My family and I recently made another trip to Gettysburg, PA, where the
bloodiest battle of the Civil War took place. As with other trips there, I
was emotionally struck by the vast amounts of bloodshed that occurred there.

Sacred Sites Threatened
by Kasey Weaver
Once again proposed plans for drilling and mining are bringing sacred sites
into harms way. Plans for opening a new strip mine in western New Mexico and
exploration and drilling for oil reserves in Montana in an area knows as the
Valley of Chiefs is bring sharp criticism by tribal leaders, environmentalist
and politicians. Valley of Chiefs is just southwest of Billings and is known
for unique rock art and historic and cultural sites. The Zuni Pueblo says the
development of a strip mine and pumping wells for the mine would harm the
flow of brine at the sacred Zuni Salt Lake, which is on pueblo land 12 miles
from the proposed mine.
