The Decision
by Sondra Ball
I was three and a half.
I walked through the garden
staring at brown pumpkin vines
and old tomato plants
sobbing deeply
body and heart betrayed
by an unloving parent.
I do not know
how long I wandered
all alone
crying.
Suddenly
the sun pierced through a cloud,
penetrating my wet, hot face.
I looked up.
An eagle flew above a maple tree.
I laughed,
and raced its shadow
across the garden.
