RE: Another story from Ground Zero in NYC.
My daughter arrived back in NY where she lives in lower Manhattan. Her friends and
fellow workers witnessed the catastrophe. Many are still in shock and grieving. Many
are volunteering in any way possible.
One young gentleman who she works with went to Ground Zero to help. He is about
nineteen, he is small built and the rescue workers suited him up. The workers were
looking for the elevator shafts so they could go down and work their way back up from
underneath. They needed someone small enough to crawl and squeeze through the
wreckage to try to find the elevator shafts.
With a Rope tied to his waist he made his way through the steel, concrete and dust
just
behind him was a captain from the NY Fire Department. In the first attempt he thought
he
found it but it proved to be a dead end. He came up for air and rest and then they
tried
again.
This time they found the elevator shaft and areas that had been filled with water, he
said
he even saw an engine of one of the aircraft. But the most traumatic sight was the
bodies
of the dead. The area he was in started to giveway and with a yank of the rope they
pulled him out crushing his arm in the process. The moment he was free of the debris
it
closed in behind him. He was traumatized by the horrific sight he saw. All he could
say
is, " I can't believe what I have seen," over and over again.
My daughter said that she hoped he would be all right, that he was strong fellow and
felt
he would be better in time.
I hope that the People in NYC dedicate this land to those who have died in this
tragedy,
and not build another tower. Let us not talk about building another tower. My hope
is
that this Country has the forethought of asking for a review our foreign policy. We
need
cooler heads to prevail than what the President and Vice President are conveying on
Television. An eye for eye will only beget more and more violence.
We do not have to go to Afghanistan to fight a war, the cells of terrorism are here in
this
country. WE need vigilance, strength and wisdom to prevail. Not an excuse to Raid our
Future by dipping into Social Security. Not an excuse to usurp the Civil Rights for
every
American.
