Many closures set for Native American Day

State and federal offices will be closed on Monday, Oct. 8. The second Monday of October is Columbus Day, a federal holiday, and in South Dakota, it is Native American Day.

Rapid City and Pennington County offices will be open Monday, however, and Rapid City garbage collection will operate as usual next week.

City offices in Box Elder and Sturgis also will be open.

But city offices in Spearfish, Belle Fourche, Custer, Deadwood, Lead, Hill City, Hot Springs and Edgemont will be closed.

County offices in Lawrence, Butte, Meade, Custer and Fall River counties will be closed.

Rapid City, Douglas, Spearfish, Sturgis, Hill City, Hot Springs and Edgemont schools will not hold classes on Monday. Rapid City Schools also will not hold classes on Friday, Oct. 5, which is a teacher-training day.

Belle Fourche, Custer and Lead-Deadwood schools will hold classes on Monday.

The Rapid City Public Library will be open.

Rapid Ride will operate as usual.

The Rapid City Journal will be published.

The Rapid City Post Office will operate on a holiday schedule Monday. There will be no residential or business mail deliveries with the exception of Express Mail. The window service lobby will be closed. However, full-service stamp vending will be available in the outer lobby.

Mail pick-up from collection boxes also will be on a holiday schedule, as posted on individual boxes.

The major stock markets are open on Monday, according to U S Bankcorp Piper Jaffray, which also is open.

Most banks will be closed Monday.
