I've been involved with the Native American Fund since 1992. I was in a couple of their commercials. I WAS involved with one of the tribal colleges in Cloquet Mn. I was helped by that orginization to finish my first degree.
This college that was so much a shining example for the College Fund--- hit a wall last year. The President of Fond du Lac Tribal Community college, my friend and cousin, Lester Jack Briggs pasted on early last winter. He is also an enrolled member of the Fond du Lac Indian Reservation.
Since his passing I've been truly confused with the changes in that college. The new President is a Nun, and wears her nun regalia to school every day. The new dean is non-indian. The teachers have been arguing amonst each other to the point of chaos. There is only 1 Native person on the schools Native American Congress board. One way I know this is because my wife is a Professor there. She came from not believing she could even get a 2 year degree to becoming a college teacher in 8 years! The new administration gave a new, incoming, white teacher seniority over my wife because the union told them it should be that way. There are only a few Native American teachers in that school and they are being over looked by the majority that wants the school to be ran and thought of "just like any other state college".
I apologize for the anger and frustration in my words. This ( tribal ) college has helped mine and my Wife's dreams of getting an education to start to come true, and I get very hurt when I see the "Indian" in this great college slipping away.

 American Indian College Fund

[excerpt:]

Native American colleges have been called “under-funded miracles” and “economic lifelines” for U.S. Indian reservations.

There are 32 tribal colleges--all founded by Indians to fight high rates of poverty, educational failure and cultural loss. These colleges created the non-profit American Indian College Fund to raise desperately-needed scholarship, endowment and operating monies.
