<http://www.argusleader.com/news/Thursdayfeature.shtml> March 14, 2002 "Activist quits fight against Indian mascots; Betty Ann Gross says Native American leaders didn't supoport her effort" By LEE WILLIAMS Argus Leader "Watertown-based Native American activist Betty Ann Gross has withdrawn five civil rights complaints she filed with the U.S. Department of Education against South Dakota schools that use Indian nicknames, mascots and imagery. Gross said she will no longer be involved in the mascot issue. She mailed notification of her intent Monday to the Department of Education and the five school districts named in her complaint: Watertown, Sioux Falls, Sisseton, Estelline and Woonsocket. Gross cited a lack of support from the American Indian community and outright hostility from other Indian activists as her reasons for quitting. "I hated to do it, but with no Indian support, I was fighting a losing battle," she said. "I found out that a lot of the activists are not better than white oppressors." *Complete at above URL* -- André Cramblit: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Operations Director Northern California Indian Development Council NCIDC (http://www.ncidc.org) is a non-profit that meets the development needs of American Indians and operates an art gallery featuring the art of California tribes (http://www.americanindianonline.com) ============================================================ The Ultimate in Tupperware Madness Spend $60.00 or more and receive FREE shipping Click Here! http://click.topica.com/caaaizpb1ddNBb2HgmNf/Tupperware ============================================================ Visit and show your support for the Grass Roots Oyate http://members.tripod.com/GrassRootsOyate Clemency for Leonard Peltier.
