-- Subject: NCAA is soliciting comments on Native mascots in college
sports

 From Carol Spindel:

The NCAA is looking at this issue seriously. With one fell swoop, they
could eliminate Indian team names and mascots at the collegiate level. It
is especially important that they hear from Native Americans to counter the
Sports Illustrated poll. The NCAA has taken action on symbols before--the
Confederate flag--their statement on that said that an NCAA championship
site must respect all people.

If you have stories of offensive behavior, activities, signs, slogans,
cheers or anything like that at the collegiate level associated with
Indian-theme teams, please mention it. If you've seen offensive activities
on television or at a game, cite that. If you were a student-athlete or
know someone who is/was affected by mascots, please state that.

Non-Native activists, please write, too, about your concerns about mascots
in college sports. They will probably decide next October but will conclude
the fact-finding part of the mission May 15. Thank you! The NCAA News did a
very good series on the mascot issue last year. Here is the link about the
mascot issue study going on now:

PLEASE FORWARD: The NCAA Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee
and the NCAA Executive Committee are in the process of considering the use
of Native Americans as sports mascots and symbols at member institutions.

Please don't forget to send your letter to the NCAA to
