NATIVE PEOPLE and INTERESTED COMMUNITY MEMBERS

Mark your calendars: August 29, 2002 at 6:30 p.m.
                                     Potawot Health Village

College of the Redwoods is currently offering a class in Native American
studies that states:

Traditional values compared to contemporary values of
the Yurok, Karuk, Hupa, Weott and Tolowa cultures
will be studied by examining economics, geography,
folklore, medicine, sexual behavior, arts and belief systems.

I have had discussions with Dr. Prystowsky, Dean of Curriculum; Dr.
Bobbitt, Vice President of Academic Affairs; and Dr. Casey Craybill,
President, about my concerns that a non-local tribal person is teaching
this class.

After I voiced my concern to these people, they indicated that I was the
first to ever complain about this issue. In other words, my single
complaint wasnt sufficient to promote any changes in who, what, why and
how they were offering the class. So.. I would like to invite any and all
interested Native American people who may have an issue or concern about
the Native American studies classes offered, who teaches them, how that was
determined, who provided guidance in developing the curriculum in the first
place and how we can help College of the Redwoods move into the 21st
century, to meet on August 29th, at 6:30 p.m. at the Potawot Health Village
in Arcata. The above-mentioned officials have been invited, along with all
the Board of Trustees members.

Its time to stop allowing educational institutions dictate and define who
we are as indigenous people, using outdated material and non-Native,
non-local instructors.

Please send this e-mail along to everyone you know who can help make a
difference, Native and non-Native, to attend this meeting. For further
information, you can contact me, Sandra Lowry, at 829-7964 or e-mail me at
