PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 9, 2002 Aboriginal Children Agreement is Historic (Vancouver, Coast Salish Territory/September 9, 2002) A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed today between BC Aboriginal leaders and the Province of British Columbia, allowing Aboriginal children to grow up within their own families and their own communities. "Today we have come together and in the presence of our Creator and our Ancestors to make a very public commitment to dedicate our collective effort to safeguard the future interest of our children," stated Chief Stewart Phillip at today's signing ceremony. "It is a truly historic MOU where the Aboriginal leaders from the Union of British Columbia Indian Chiefs, First Nations Summit, United Native Nations, Metis Provincial Council of BC, service delivery organizations, and the Province of BC agree to set aside our political and ideological differences and commit to work collectively together for our children." The MOU is a working framework that will serve to create a partnership to enable the Union of British Columbia Indian Chiefs, the First Nations Summit, United Native Nations, Metis Provincial Council of BC and the provincial government to create a joint management committee to oversee the establishment and development of Regional Aboriginal Authorities. The committee will discuss issues of safety and security of aboriginal children and families as the province transfers child protection and family development resources and services to five Regional Aboriginal Authorities. Chief Phillip concluded, "We cannot stand idly by and do nothing when we know that aboriginal children make up 40 per cent of the children in provincial care. The regional aboriginal authorities will allow for aboriginal communities to take control at the local level. >From the UBCIC perspective, we believe that the establishment of these authorities is only the initial step to bring down the number of our children in care. There is certainly a lot of work to do but we will only succeed if we can remember and continuously carry in our hearts the solemn commitment we made here today." -30- FOR MORE INFORMATION CONTACT: Chief Stewart Phillip Cell: (250) 490-5314 President, Union of British Columbia Indian Chiefs -- Established in 1969, the Union of British Columbia Indian Chiefs is a political organization protecting the Aboriginal Title and Rights of our member communities.
