To Native Organizations and Allies: This is an urgent request for help, your prayers, and your support!
Last Wednesday night Sage Council was alerted that the mayor of Albuquerque has quietly started construction of a road from Ventana Ranch to Unser Boulevard, which will cause harm the Petroglyph National Monument, a sacred site. We are alarmed because this road was built without the knowledge of the adjacent neighbors, the National Park Service, Albuquerque City Councilors nor the public. Our organization has been consistently involved in the city planning issues and we were never informed about this road. This road is not in the planning documents that prioritizes funding for all roads. We are opposed for the following reasons: 1. This will cause harm to the Petroglyph National Monument, by bringing thousands of commuter cars into the Monument area. The traffic would flow right through the Boca Nogra Canyon, the most popular tourist destination with in the Petroglyph National Monument. 2. The road would only make it easier for the Mayor to build the Paseo Del Norte, a road which SAGE Council has been opposing for the past six years. 3. This extension was planned solely at the discretion of Mayor Chavez without input a.) from adjacent residents, whose property values would be impacted by the commuter feeder road; b) from National Park Service which will be severely impacted by the road; c.) the civic leaders and politicians, and most of all, 4) the interested public who have been involved in the controversial road issues within the last decade. It is very urgent to have people attend this meeting. We are requesting all organizations to bring people to: City Council Meeting at 5th Street and Marquette Monday, September 9, 2002, 4:30 p.m. As you know, SAGE Council is a Native American led organization with an active and committed membership whose primary aim is to protect a Native American sacred site at the Petroglyph National Monument in Albuquerque. We also need your prayers and support for the protection of this sacred site. Our Phone Number is 260-4696. Very Respectfully, Laurie Weahkee and the SAGE Council Crew. -- Andr Cramblit: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Operations Director Northern California Indian Development Council NCIDC (http://www.ncidc.org) is a non-profit that meets the development needs of American Indians and operates an art gallery featuring the art of California tribes (http://www.americanindianonline.com) COMMUNICATION IS THE KEY TO THE FUTURE OF AMERICAN INDIANS/NATIVE AMERICANS/ALASKAN NATIVES & HAWAIIAN ISLANDERS.
