December 10th
1834: William Marshall, representing the United States, and POTAWATOMI
Indians will
sign a treaty today at Tippecanoe. Six sections of land will be traded
annual payments of
$1000, and a small amount of supplies.
1836: The second part of the fifth group of "friendly" CREEKs,
approximately 1600 in
number, arrive at Fort Gibson, in eastern Indian Territory. The total
of both groups will be
2237. The gains will come from stragglers of earlier groups.
1873: Lt.C.L.Hudson, and 42 men from the fourth cavalry, and 9
SEMINOLE Indian
scouts, attack a band of Indians, near Kickapoo Springs, Texas. Nine
"hostiles" are killed.
One soldier, and several Indians, are wounded. Eighty-one stolen
horses are recovered.
1890: Miles orders Ft.Yeates to "secure" Sitting Bull.
1991: The Custer Monument name is changed to the Little Big Horn
Battleground
Monument.
December 11th
1753: French, under Legardeur de Saint-Pierre, are at Fort le Boeuf on
French Creek,
near present day Waterford, in northwestern Pennsylvania . Major
George Washington
arrives today delivering a message from Virginia Governor Dinwiddie.
The message says
the French are trespassing, and to leave.
1804: Lewis visits Pocapsahe (sic).
1833: Captain Page, and almost 700 CHOCTAWs, reach their destination
at Fort
Towson, in eastern Indian Territory. The others in the group had split
off and gone to Fort
Smith.
1836: The second half of the original contingent of "friendly" CREEKs
arrive at Fort
Gibson, in eastern Indian Territory.
1890: Sitting Bull sends a letter to Indian Agent McLaughlin. He says
he is going to the
Pine Ridge Agency.
1937: "Undisposed of" land in the Flathead Indian Reservation in
Montana which had
originally been designated for lots in a townsite is returned to
tribal ownership today.
December 12th
1729: Today, the YAZOO Indians will attack French Fort St.Pierre in
southern Louisiana.
The YAZOO have joined the NATCHEZ in their fight against the French.
They will kill all
17 of the soldiers at the fort. They give the women and children to
the CHICKASAWs as
slaves.
1791: Report of St.Clair's defeat reaches the Army.
1804: IOWA Indians give Lewis and Clark food.
1806: Today, in what would eventually become Rome, Georgia, CHEROKEE
Principal
Chief Stand Watie was born. Watie would figure promenently in the
CHEROKEE removal
process. His brother, Buck Watie (Elias Boudinot), was the editor of
the Cherokee
Phoenix, and his uncle and cousin were Major and John Ridge. Stand
Watie signed the
Treaty of New Echota, cedeing all of the CHEROKEEs lands in the east
for land west of
the Mississippi River. Watie managed to escape the people who murdered
his three famous
relatives on June 22, 1839. Watie would eventually kill one of the men
accused of killing his
uncle. Watie would enlist as a Colonel in the Confereracy in 1861;
and, he would fight in
the Battle of Pea Ridge. Watie would be the last Conferate General to
surrender.
1882: President Arthur, by Executive Order today, sets up the Pima
Agency in the Gila
Bend Reserve. It will be 35 square miles in size, and occupied by the
PAPAGOs. It will be
bounded by township five south, range five west, and the Gila and Salt
River meridian,
except for section eighteen.
1890: McLaghlin gets Sitting Bull's Pine Ridge letter.
Every: Many PUEBLOs celebrate the Lady of Guadalupe Feastival.
