Subject: Dirty Tricks as Zapatistas seek support for referendum

Zapatistas seek support for referendum

MEXICO CITY -- About 5,000 Zapatista rebel delegates began arriving in
states across the country Sunday to whip up support for a March 21
referendum on the rights of Indians.

The deployment was marred by minor incidents, including clashes between
Zapatistas and soldiers in Quintana Roo on the Yucatan Peninsula, according
to press reports. In Veracruz, delegates found that their office phone
lines had been cut, and a heavy military presence was reported in some
villages.

The nonbinding, unofficial referendum calls for recognition for Indian
rights and the withdrawal of government troops from the southeastern state
of Chiapas.
