                     Trout In Trouble
A disease is killing off rainbow trout in the western U.S. at an alarming
rate, and it does pose a threat to the Black Hills trout population.
Whirling Disease is spread by a tiny organism that infects that part of
the
fish that controls its attitude in the water. As a result, infected fish
eventually swim in tight whirling circles until they die. So far, no
documented cases of Whirling Disease have turned up the Black Hills,
but Game, Fish & Parks officials are very concerned. Montana,
Wyoming and Nebraska have been hard hit and lost major portions of
their trout populations. All it takes is one careless fisherman fishing
in an
infected body of water to transport infection spores in a live well, or
even in dried mud on a boot to a South Dakota lake to threaten fish
    there.
