Zedillo Tours Rebel Region

LAS MARGARITAS, Mexico (Reuters) -- President Ernesto Zedillo, locked in a
public relations war with Zapatista rebels, today sounded the praises of
his Government's campaign to restore peace to the southern state of Chiapas.

Just days before Zapatista rebels hold a nationwide plebiscite on Indian
rights, Mr. Zedillo toured Chiapas to list Government gains in providing
health care, education, land and housing to residents of the state.

"We aim to fix the underdevelopment and neglect of Chiapas, which has gone
on for many decades, even centuries," Mr. Zedillo told a crowd of mostly
Indian women, some nursing babies, as he opened a health clinic in the
village of Las Margaritas.

The Zedillo administration and the Zapatistas have been battling over
public opinion ahead of Sunday's rebel plebiscite.
