And now:Ish <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes:
The scene opens with a call to the Enterprise to come at once to this mining
asteroid. The miners are being attacked by a rock creature able to tunnel
through solid rock. While exploring the tunnels created by this being, the
miners and crew come upon vast chambers hewn out of solid asteroid filled with
silvery nodules resembling very large ball bearings. Thousands of them lay
broken on the floor scattered where they had been discarded by the miners.
Later, when communication had finally been established with this silicon based
life, they learn these nodules were eggs..the future of the Horta lay in
shambles amidst the rocks of their birthing chambers..the Mother Horta moans
for the lost generations...in turn, the miners were horrified. In their
ignorance they had destroyed thousands of this mother's children...never
realizing they were life in search of birth.
I never fail to think of this episode of Star Trek when the issue of genocide
is raised. How many lives are casually shattered through ignorance? How many
children will be destroyed, unborn and unheard? How many fail to achieve
communication with the destroyers in the face of this mass destruction,
finding the reality too horrible to grasp, the destroyers too removed to hear?
Hear please, this message from everywhere to anyone with ears...from all of
us who depend on this life sustaining nurturing earth. It is the moan of the
future.. and it is dying.
We plant food.. we want enough to eat. to breathe clean air that does not
stifle breath....
The men from the Destroyer come almost daily. They fell our trees, scar the
Earth, clog the streams, kill the buffalo..ignore the cries of the wounded
Earth. Who knows the deep psychological and emotional scars that are on the
souls and minds of these children who see their future destroyed... the future
of the people of Lobone, Magwi, Pine Ridge, Peskeumskut, Detroit, New York,
Palotaka, Agoro, Honduras, Peru, Chiapas, Los Angeles, East Timor, Iraq,
Bosnia, Kosovo any town, in any country..
We feel abandoned! Alone and frightened! Disillusioned and confused! The
cry that arises from all this suffering and pain is: "Is there anybody,
anywhere, who can hear us? Is there anybody, Anywhere, who really cares?"
Can anyone hear, can anyone become a voice for the future? Initiate a genuine
dialogue between the leaders of any Nation, the owners of any refinery, the
companies that mine the Earth, fell the trees, kill the buffalo, clog the
rivers, destroy the hopes of the children, poison their spirits with lies....
We have one rock to call home and like the Horta are a part of the Earth and
the Earth a part of us. Mining practices, manufacturing processes, waste
accumulations of nuclear products and byproducts, terminator technology which
genetically manipulates seed so the next generation of life will never be born
of the parent plant, war for oil, war for market control, starvation because
life sustaining crops are no longer economically feasible in a global economy
within developing nations, famine brought on by global warming which creates
excess energy propagating killer storms and flooding, droughts, blizzards, and
incredible temperature swings ...these are all signs that the next generations
may not achieve birth.
We, like the miners have a choice, to find the common ground among all species
that ride this rock called earth, to learn to understand the language that
sustains life or face the reality that we have through our ignorance condemned
the future generations to nonexistence. We have through our silence and
ignorance shattered the fragile shells protecting the life of future
generations.
In the Star Trek episode, peace was achieved as each learned to appreciate the
other, respect the right to existence of the other. Can we?
