Louise Benally phoned me the day before yesterday and informed me of an
upcoming action.
At the time I was not near a place where I could write the information, but
she said she was going to FAX me the information the following morning with
the information. My computer (which I receive faxes on) crashed yesterday
for awhile, so I may have missed her fax of the announcement. It will be
on April 3rd, at 10 am, and as best as I can remember, at the office of a
public official (I think the mayor) who is ALSO on the relocation
committee. Rather then wait for the fax, I am giving what information I
can recall now, so that there is enough lead time for those of you who can
come to support/witness and for media coverage.
If any of you have the full details of this planned event, please let me
know so that I can post them. Likewise, please let me know of any
demonstrations or fund raising activities that you may be involved with to
support the fighting this forced relocation, impoundments, and other human
rights violation issues against the Dineh. Being aware of each other's
activities I think is encouraging and may give us new ideas to pursue.
Now, on to the mining issue.

Subject: Air quality Complaint against Peabody and upcoming meeting with
mining inspectors
Dear Big Mountain supporters,
This coming Tuesday, April 6, 1999, there will be a meeting of the local
residents with the director of the Albuquerque Field Office of Office of
Surface Mining, mining inspectors from Albuquerque and Denver, and Mine Safety
Health Administration officials. The meeting will take place at the home of
Glenna Begay. Site inspections will take place early Tuesday morning and
continue on Wednesday morning, April 7, 1999. That evening the Dineh
delegation leaves from the Phoenix airport.
If anyone can help - We need sheepherders for people living in the mining
permit area early next week so that people can attend the meeting and
participate in site investigations.
What follows is a Citizens Complaint signed by 21 people. More signatures are
forthcoming.
Thank you,
Marsha Monestersky
