Elder Passing:
Mashpee Wampanoag Chief Vernon Sly Fox Pocknett

MASHPEE, MA. Vernon Sly Fox Pocknett, 65, of the Mashpee Wampanoag
Nation, passed away Wednesday, March 31, in the V.A. Hospital, Jamaica
Plain, after a long illness.

Chief Sly Fox was born, raised and educated in Mashpee.  He worked for
many years as a Truck Driver for Campanella and Cardi.  He was an avid
shell fisherman and worked many years on Aquaculture Projects for his
nation.  He was also at the forefront of both the Tribal-Nation
Recognition for his nation and the preservation of his people's
aboriginal hunting and fishing rights.

Chief Vernon Pocknett was an Army Veteran, serving in the 82nd Airborne
Division. He also served as a Board Member and President of the Mashpee
Wampanoag Tribal Council; member of the Wampanoag Rod & Gun Club for
over 40 years; and served his community at various times as a coach of
youth baseball, football and basketball.  During the late '90's Chief
Pocknett led his people in joining the League of Indigenous Sovereign
Nations.

Survivors: Longtime companion and caregiver - Betty Peters, "Sweetheart"
to Vernon. Daughters - Renee Banks, Sherry Galvin & Elsie Pocknett, all
of Mashpee.  Sons - Thomas Hendricks, Sr., Vernon M. Pocknett and
Douglas Pocknett, Sr., all of Mashpee.  Three sisters - Hazel Pocknett
of Wareham, Edna Peters of Mashpee and Katherine Gomes of Centerville.  
22 Grandchildren, one Great Grandchild and many Nieces and Nephews.

Ceremonies:

Visiting Hours will be at his home, at 262 Main Street, Mashpee, from 3
p.m. Friday, April 2 to 1:00 p.m., Saturday, April 3.  A walking
procession to the Old Indian Cemetery will begin at 1:00 p.m., Saturday,
prior to a traditional burial.

Donations may be made to the Vernon Pocknett Memorial Survival Camp
Fund, c/o Mashpee Wampanoag Tribal Council, P.O. Box 1048, Mashpee, MA
02649.
