SOL COMMUNICATIONS
EASTER CARVAN TO BIG MOUNTAIN
APRIL 1999.
Compiled by Julia Orr

On this caravan we traveled with author Karen Kay and Paul Bailey from a
church group, Joelle Davis - Sol Communications and her mother Elle Davis,
(our resident elder for the trip), Kim Mizrahi from ARC, Arthur
Janczak from Shade Tree Multicultural Foundation, Julia Orr, Mauro Oliveira
and Jennifer Waggoner from Sol Communications, Jim LePointe from So. CA
AIM, Andy and his friend from Arizona AIM.

Mauro, Julia , Paul and Kay left LA Friday 5.30 pm carrying a truck load of
food from LA based school children and churches wishing to remain
anonymous. We also carried requested cleaning supplies for Glenna Begay and
600 videos of "Vanishing Prayer" for Marsha and the elders to take to
Geneva to distribute. Along with some useful suitcases and bags for people
to use travelling to the UN. We also carried ink jet cartridges and a
voltage converter to run the SDN computer in Europe.

Joelle and Elle left LA about 9 PM with Arthur and Kim who where driving a
truck gifted by Ursula from San Cayentano sweat circle for John Benally.
Joelle's truck was loaded with food also donated from the school children
and churches.

Approximate total weight of food-1000lbs. (By no means does this reflect a
regular amount of food for us to carry; we usually deliver approx.
4000lbs of food.)

Mauro, Julia, Kay and Paul arrived after a safe journey in Kaibeto at 8.30
the next morning where we dropped the videos to Marsha at the SDN
office. We left under some well aimed snowballs from Carlos Begays' boys
and met up with Joelle, Elle, Kim and Arthur at Kaibeto gas station. We
were happy to see everyone here safely. No communications so
far with Jim and Jennifer arriving from Phoenix with members of AIM.

Side Note, the video duplication costs of $900 was miraculously donated
the night before this caravan. We had the videos duplicated without having
the funds available the llth hour donation saved our butts.

We arrived on the front of some bad weather and realized we would need
chains to get out. First stop Glenna Begays where we dropped part of the
food, we were not going to be able to distribute a lot of the food
ourselves because of the bad conditions of the roads. There was going to be
a meeting at
Glennas in the week where the food could be distributed between some
families. Dropped cleaning supplies and other personal items for
Glenna. Had some breakfast/ lunch with Grandma and talked about the
upcoming trip to the UN. Glenna expressed how important this trip was to
them but how concerned she was about being away from the land for a
month.

Time to hit Big Mountain Boulevard and John Benally's. We dropped off
between 6 ? 10 boxes of food to John and Leonard as well as the donatedm
truck complete with chains. Hopefully this will enable them to visit and
help out Pauline Whitesinger and the others in Cactus Valley when the
storms pass.
Leonard Benally will be travelling to Europe with the elders. They will
leave Phoenix on Wednesday.

We left Johns just before sundown to visit Hank and Genevieve Greyeyes. We
had limited supplies of food left but we did manage to leave about 4 boxes
of food. Met up with Jim and Jennifer, Andy and friend who were carrying
some sheet rock, roofing and a box of nails for Grandpa to help repair the
house. Grandma Greyeyes was at a family wedding and was
recovering well from her cough. Flagstaff support had visited and taken out
the moldy insulation hanging from the ceiling and temporarily patched with
plastic.

Onward to Dennis Kootsie at Hotevilla. Jim and Jennifer went to Kaibeto to
meet with up with Marsha and help out with pre Geneva errands. Andy may
have gone with, we lost track. Up at Hotevilla we dropped a couple
of boxes of food each with Dennis, Martin and Emery. Dennis set us up to
stay in his wife, Pearls family house in Hotevilla village. We got the
stove cooking with coal and settled in for the night.

Side Note: Each trip now we are running to Hotevilla with supplies. On
this trip we did contact the Hopi Tribe to let them now we were coming and
attempted to get a travel permit. Eugene Kay, Chief of Staff with
Hopi Tribe says that the exclusion order is only for protecting the range,
lands and people who give them problems breaking the law and giving them
trouble. The office of Hopi Land say they have no permit to
issue. Since our caravans are for both the Hopi and Dineh we dont expect
any needs for permits.

Easter Sunday morning we wake up to news of the impending bad storm headed
our way. Time to rally the troops and get going. We stopped at Denniss and
bought some wonderful rattles. Dennis and Pearl are both
fine artists, Dennis makes must have gourd rattles and Pearl weaves
awesome plaques.
Heavy snow flurries started to add to the snow already on the ground so we
left, paying a visit to prophesy rock. With blessings from the Earth
Mother we had a beautiful clear corridor of weather until we left the
res. Come mid afternoon we were stuck in traffic , accidents ahead and
snow flurries falling. The weather has truly found us. It is bad for
driving but looks incredibly beautiful with the land covered in snow,
peaceful and pure. A 3 car accident west of Kingman with fatalities
completely stopped all
traffic on the 40.
We managed to turn back and traveled the 66 to Kingman then on home to Los
Angeles around 3AM Monday morning.

Summary: We were only able to make a few stops compared to the 20-30 we
have been making this year so far. But seeing John and Leonard's eyes when
told them the truck was their's made it all worthwhile. Also, we only
recieved about 25% of the food donations that we have been blessed with
this winter.
